The objective of this study is to conduct a literature review of English articles regarding the education of students with disabilities from the perspective of gender and education, with particular focus on the underrepresentation of women and their career development, and to provide suggestions for future research in Japan. Firstly, regarding underrepresentation of women with disabilities, it was clarified that disproportionate representation may occur in overlooking a girl's special educational needs under traditonal gender role models for women. It was suggested that
underrepresentation of women in special needs education should be dealt with as a gender issue and atttention should be given to disadvantages faced by girls who did not receive the special education they needed. Secondly, regarding career development of girls with disabilities, it was found that disadvantages in employment for young girls with disabilities still existed. In addition since vocational education and training was conducted with traditional gender models, girls were unable to form their awareness of job opportunities beyond traditional gender models. Finally a few programs of career development with a focus on work were presented. Based on the above-mentioned findings, a few suggestions were made for the future development of research in this particular field in Japan.
