The Hitoyoshi Basin is located at the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, SW Japan. The basin has been considered to be a tilt block basin bounded by two faults at the northern and southern margins of the basin. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a “pull-apart basin model”in aiding lower secondary school children to acquire the concept of lateral fault in their science study. This model was developed to help the
children easily visualize the concept of lateral fault and understand it intuitively when manipulating the teaching materials. Lower secondary school students, after learning the character of lateral fault topography, identified the location of lateral faults using topography maps. A sampling of lateral fault topography encourages them to be aware of
natural disasters and their prevention.
