This study describes the function of psychiatric care management and identifies and evaluates the role of the CNS in psychiatric care. Thirty-four psychiatric care professionals including two CNSs were interviewed regarding the function of the psychiatric management care team and the role and evaluation of psychiatric CNS within the team involving (a) cases of long-term hospitalization after repeated readmissions and (b) mental disorders in which treatment is difficult. This study got permission from The Research Ethical Committee of Graduate School of Health Sciences, Kumamoto University. This study had implemented between Apr. in 2011 and Mar.in 2012. The contents of the interviews
were analyzed qualitatively according to three themes and six categories. Three themes
were the function of psychiatric care management team,the role of CNS,and the issues & outcomes of patients. Six categories were the following. 1) Readiness o fpatients, families and professionals for community living,
2) Significance of assessment for patients and sharing the treatment goal in the team,
3) Partnership between team and out-side teamm ember,
4) Role of the CNS to promote the consistent approach for patients,
5) The difficulty of each role in the team,
6) Patients' outcome by this team in the community.
These results were discussed from the viewpoint what is required of a functional team and the leadership of a CNS.
