This paper examines the continuous assessment of English communication ability at the Attached Junior High School of the Faculty of Education, Kumamoto University. English communication ability needs to be measured at several stages of leaning and evaluated by various data concerning students' English ability and skills; therefore, continuous assessment is essential. The English department at the Attached Junior High School assigns about 50% of the final grade to continuous assessment. A meaningful interaction activity called '1minute chat' was incorporated into class as away for both motivating students toward communication and monitoring their English communication continuously. The results of the analysis reported here indicate positive effects on students' motivation toward communication and some problematic features of the continuous assessment such as doubts on its reliability and practicality.
