The extent to which students need to be informed about these issues as part of preparation for the writing of their undergraduate thesis is argued for. Engagement by students with the philosophy of science is also advocated as pedagogically useful in alerting students to the distinctive nature of rigorous academic research and how this may differ from their inherited notions of knowledge inquiry. Also, some core understandings and skills related to rigorous empirical inquiry are discussed as important for students in being well prepared for writing an undergraduate thesis.
