This paper intends to investigate gender, which is an important perspectives to discuss about disabilities from a social and cultural context, in relation to education. Sri Lanka, one of the developing countries in South Asia, was selected for analysis. In this paper, the social and cultural background of women, disability and education in Sri Lanka was described first separately and next intersections of these three areas were described together. This paper reveals that firstly, in Sri Lanka, equaliy of men and women was seen on the surface, but gender roles especially for women seemed to be embedded in attitudes in their lives. Secondly, as the National Policy on Disability for Sri Lanka notes, society’s negative attitudes towards women with disabilities of the society tend to lead “protection” of them by care-givers. Thirdly, while girls without disabilities receive education more than boys without disabilities, fewer girls with disabilities go to school than boys with disabilities. This reversal in the number of students participating in education by gender, between students with and without disabilities, needs careful consideration as one of the future tasks.",
