内容記述 | It is perfectly clear that perfect aspect of verbs in English was more definitely formalized and visualized by was of grammaticalization of the lexical verb have meaning 'possess.' And not only the corruption of the morphological concord between nouns and past-participial adjectives, but also word order of subordinate clauses, which was V-final in Old English, and the subsequent rigid fixation of the SVO word order even in subordinate clauses during the Middle English period seem to have contributed to the establishment of the convergence of verbal elements that the construction using have originally had. Concerning Chaucer's use of the pluperfect forms in his General Prologue and The Tale of Melibee of The Canterbury Tales, the situation was very similar to that found in Early Modern English. That is, the system of the perfect had not neatly been systematized like Present-day Standard English yet, although even now the demarcation between the perfect and the simple past cannot so clealy be drawn occasionally. Therefore, vacillation between the two must have been inevitable from the very beginning of the perfect. And if Chaucer had known the contracted form ‘'d' for had, which can reduce one or two syllables and did not exist in Middle English, he might have used more pluperfect forms in his verse works instead of using simple past forms. | |||||
