By the 15th century AD, a state society whose subsistence was based on food production had emerged. Probably the most important factor which contributed to the formation of sociopolitical complexity in this region was an agriculturally-based subsistence economy. This paper first reviews existing hypotheses regarding the beginning of food production in the Central Ryukyu region. Then, it examines those hypotheses against the direct data from macro plant remains. The results reject all previously proposed hypotheses and suggest that agriculture in this region started between about the 9th and 10th centuries AD. Finally, this paper examines the best hypothesis that adequately explains the emergence of food production in this region. The available data do not seem to support Hayden's competitive feasting hypothesis.
