          <datacite:description descriptionType="Other">The objective of this study was to examine seasonal variation in erosion rates and grain size distribution of sediment produced from volcanic hillslopes. We sampled clifts and talus slopes on the flanks of Tarumae Volcano, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Climatic conditions of this region are characterized by high precipitation levels and low air temperatures, which profoundly after the erosion processes on hillslopes. From July to November, 1989, we measured air temperature, precipitation, and calculated erosion rates and grain size distributions of sediment collected in distributed boxes. The results of this research showed: 1) sediment production rates increased markedly (ten to a hundred times) when fluctuations of air temperature caused freeze-thaw cycles to detach particles from the soil mantle surface; 2) the grain size distribution of eroded sediment varied between seasons with fine material (&lt;10 mm in diameter) mainly eroded in summer and coarser material eroded predominantly in fall to early winter; and 3) dominant erosion processes varied between sites and between seasons. In summer, wind erosion associated with wetting and drying occurred on the cliff while splash erosion was the dominant process on the talus slope. In fall to early winter, however, erosion associated with freezing and thawing was the dominant process at both sites. Sediment production rates from volcanic hillslopes in subpolar zone are one to two orders of magnitude greater in fall to early winter than in the summer despite heavy rainfall.</datacite:description>
