<dc:description>Infectious diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis that historically have killed
millions of people were almost conquered in the middle of 20th century by the discovery
of antibiotics, and development of chemotherapy. Despite these progresses, because of
the inappropriate antibiotic use in the clinic, antibiotic-resistant strains of various
bacteria have dramatically increased over the past decade. Moreover, the emergence of
new pathogens and the resurgence of old ones have also increased. Therefore,
development of alternative therapeutic strategies targeting host response is urgently
needed for the treatment of various infections based on full understanding of the
molecular pathogenesis of each infection. In the present study, I investigated the
molecular mechanisms underlying nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and
Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae)-induced host defense responses. NTHi and
S. pneumoniae are important human pathogens causing inflammatory diseases including
otitis media, the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and
pneumonia.</dc:description>
