This paper describes the design and outcomes of an international virtual exchange program using English as a lingua franca. The exchange was between junior high schools in Japan and Indonesia. While students did not express a strong interest in English as such before the program, they thought that English and communication skills were most useful for their future, Although they wanted mostly to learn about the other country and its culture, and remembered most communicating with their partners, what they felt they learned most was how to communicate in English. |
