The working notes and manuscripts written in the late 1940s and the early 1950s show that Baldwin originally intended to write about a group of white characters with different ethnic backgrounds. His involvement in the Civil Rights movement in the late 1950s appears to have inspired him to pen the story of Rufus Scott, an African-American jazz drummer, whose premature death influences his white friends’ race consciousness. The first section of this article traces Baldwin’s manuscripts and working notes chronologically to clarify how he attempted to merge the story of the victimized African-American man into a novel revolving around white characters. The latter part focuses on the story of the interracial couple, Italian-American Vivaldo Moore and African-American Ida Scott, who struggle to come to terms with Rufus’s sudden suicide and confront the difficulty of bridging racial and ethnic boundaries that complicate their relationship.
