| 内容記述 | This study aimed to examine whether native Japanese speakers can identify the number of syllables in English words, ranging from one to five syllables, in written or spoken form. A total of 189 paired data sets from syllable-counting tasks were analyzed to examine differences and correlations in accuracy and in the values reported by participants between spoken and written words. The results showed that participants gave significantly more correct responses to spoken English words than to written words, although a positive correlation was observed between the two modalities. Additionally, the accuracy of responses decreased as the number of syllables in the English words increased, regardless of whether they were presented through pronunciation or spelling. This suggests that native Japanese speakers did not use mora units to identify English syllables, but instead depended on the phonetic saliency of the words and their internal L2 system. | |||||||||||
