A total of 189 paired data sets from syllable-counting tasks were analyzed to examine differences and correlations in accuracy and in the values reported by participants between spoken and written words. The results showed that participants gave significantly more correct responses to spoken English words than to written words, although a positive correlation was observed between the two modalities. Additionally, the accuracy of responses decreased as the number of syllables in the English words increased, regardless of whether they were presented through pronunciation or spelling.
