This means that its system to morphologically present grammatical functions such as cases or moods, making use of inflectional endings has changed into the one that mainly shows them syntactically, utilizing prepositions or specific types of word order. As for simplifying case-endings of nouns or adjectives, it seemed to play a crucial role whether the ending involved has a particular sound, i.e., /s/ or not. And concerning the loss of the conjugational endings of verbs for their subjunctive and imperative moods, it was compensated with the extended use of the indicative mood and the introduction of non-finite verb forms instead of their finite forms, the latter of which is rather exceptional in that a ‘clause’ with a nominative subject has no finite verb at all.
