【Background】 Insomnia is linked to psychiatric and lifestyle-related diseases and may increase dementia risk. Identifying lifestyle and environmental factors is essential for community-level prevention. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of insomnia in Kumamoto Prefecture residents using the AIS and to clarify associated lifestyle and environmental factors. 【Methods】This cross-sectional study analyzed existing survey data from 2,863 residents in two towns of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, insured under the National Health Insurance or the Late Elderly Health Care System. Insomnia was assessed using the AIS, with a cutoff score of ≥6 indicating insomnia. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, environmental, and psychological factors were collected via self-administered questionnaires. Chi-square tests and t-tests were used for group comparisons, and logistic regression was applied to identify factors associated with insomnia. 【Results】The mean AIS score was 4.4±3.4, significantly higher in women (4.7±3.4) than in men (3.9±3.2, p<0.001). Logistic regression revealed that women had a higher risk of insomnia (adjusted OR=1.59, 95%CI: 1.34–1.90, p<0.001). Both short (<6h) and long (≥8h) sleep durations increased risk (OR=3.04, 95%CI: 2.55–3.63, p<0.001). Lack of sleep satisfaction (OR=16.10, p<0.001) and non-restorative sleep (OR=13.33, p<0.001) showed the strongest associations. Psychological factors, such as absence of happiness (OR=2.94, p<0.001) and poor concentration (OR=4.81, p<0.001), were also significant. Environmental conditions, including noise (OR=2.37, p<0.001) and cold extremities (OR=2.04, p<0.001), as well as irregular eating and late-night meals, were associated with insomnia, whereas alcohol consumption, smoking, and napping were not.【Conclusions】Insomnia among Kumamoto residents was strongly related to female sex, poor subjective sleep quality, psychological distress, environmental discomfort, and irregular eating habits. Community-based, multifaceted interventions focusing on sleep hygiene education, noise reduction, thermal comfort, and dietary regularity may be effective strategies for prevention and management of insomnia. |
