There had been a few pieces based on traditional motives among his early works. However in the 1930's after the painter's rediscovering Chinese tradition, these numbers increased. Several characteristics of theses paintings can be found, including, (1) Feng adopted the composition techniques of European art. (2) When there is similarity between traditional motif and the foreign arts, Feng's production is more abundant. Foreign impulses are important even for the reformation of tradition.
