Twelve multi-storied steel frames with external diaphragm connection were prepared for the numerical study. The external diaphragm connection is dealt as semi-rigid connection. A local deformation occurs at the beam- ends. Without the fracture of the connections, the deformation can absorb a part of total earthquake energy, and better earthquake resistant characteristics can be obtained. On the other hand, this kind of the connection keeps the continuity of the columns at the connection; it can avoid the cutting at the ends of columns under high stress.
