We set up two containers (one on the rooftop of the Science building of Faculty of Education, the other on the garden for science teaching materials), and made a pond as small size biotopes. We observed them contiguously from May 2007 for about 2 years. After 2 months, there evolved cyanobacteria and small algae. After then, we observed many species of algae, protozoa and insects. These observations showed the effectiveness of the small biotopes for the place on harvesting of living materials for science education. The water samples were also used for contiguous measurements of water temperature and water quality. The large quantities of green algae evolved were used for photosynthesis experiments and for papermaking activities. The photo and explanation sheets of 20 species of spring plant that were detected around the pond were confirmed as a simple illustrated reference guide for spring plants. |
