Angptls possess an N-terminal coiled-coil domain and a C-terminal, both characteristic of angiopoietins. However, Angptls de not bind to either the angiopoietin receptor Tie2 or the related protein Tie1 and remain orphan ligands. Angiopoietin-like protein family 4 (Angptl 4) has been shown to regulate lipoprotein metabolism through the inhibition of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). However, it is unknown whether Angptl 4 influences the development and progression of atherosclerosis.
