Bench and pilot plant nitrogen removal studies on the wastewater from dye factory were carried out. Nitrogen removal process by nitrification and denitrification process using pile fabrics as biomass carriers was established. Anammox process, which is now attracting much attention as a new nitrogen conversion pass way, was investigated to achieve higher nitrogen removal rate. Up-flow anammox column reactor could be established using activated sludge of Wakagawa domestic sewage treatment plant as seed sludge. Partial nitritation (PN)process using acrylic pile fabrics as biomass carriers was also established as the pretreatment of anammox process. Simultaneous occurrence of PN and anammox reactions was observed during long term operation of this PN reactor. This reaction was quite resembled to single stage nitrogen removal using anammox and partial nitritation (SNAP).
