However, there was no inconvenience for them to function without any indication of their grammatical number, because the inflectional systems in Old English were intact. In Middle English, the corruption of the inflectional systems brought about regularizing plural forms, but a handful of them resisted the trend in terms of analogical extension or the conserving effect of high token-frequency. Among them were several base plurals which survived the competition with other phonologically or morphologically similar lexical items. In addition, when Modern English started to be standardized, some irregular grammatical assets including these base plurals had the potential enough to be symbolically used as prestige markers.
