| 内容記述 | The fifteenth century still witnessed the following paradigms of the verb do: to do V, have done V, might do V, est.(Koma(1994)). This means that at that time the periphrastic auxiliary do had not completely developed yet. Under such situation, one thing I try to point out in this paper is that one possible, if not absolute, source of which the auxiliary do was derived would be the lexical verb do denoting 'action'.(Neither the causative nor the perfective do could be the absolute source.) This claim can be supported by the fact that the full verb do was able to co-occur with various (almost all) kinds of action noun and formed a verb phrase in which the do tended to function as a mere 'empty/vacuous/colorless' verb, and rather, the object noun was assigned the semantic content of the verb phrase involved. This emptiness/vacuousness/colorlessness of the verb do is thought to be one of the triggers which caused the development of the auxiliary do from the lexical do. In addition to the above fact, there existed the confusion between noun and verb because of the leveling of the inflectional endings in the Middle English period, and the constant conversion from noun to verb in the history of the English language, both of which could probably be helping factors for the development of the auxiliary do. And since this viewpoint does not seem to have been seriously tackled so far, I think that it should also be thoroughly examined in a corpus ranging from Old English to Modern English. | |||||
