| 内容記述 | In the 'be+Infinitive' construction the infinitive is a Predicate Nominative, and it functions as either a Substantive-Equivalent infinitive or an Adjective-Equivalent one. In terms of form and meaning, the Adjective-Equivalent Infinitive is furthermore divided into two classes: Retroactive and Non-Retroactive. In the present paper I try to clarify the following things concerning this construction in the Chaucer corpus: (1)The Substantive-Equivalent Infinitive. This construction is met 67 times in Chaucer, and 35 of them in The Parson's Tale. (2)The Retroactive Infinitive. This is also found relatively often, occupying 41.6% of the Active Infinitives. The Passive Infinitive is therefore rare.(There are only two.) (3)The Non-Retroactive Infinitive. One example of this infinitive denoting 'futurity,' to comen is very frequent. And curiously enough, there is no for to-Infinitive denoting 'futurity' at all in the prose corpus. (4)The 'be+Retroactive Infinitive' in Boece. This construction is extremely frequently transcribed from the Gerundive itself in the original, occupying about 83%, and it is rather rare that the original 'sum+Gerundive' construction is rendered without any change into the 'be+Retroactive Infinitive' one.(We have only three transcriptions of this kind.) (5)The 'be+Non-Retroactive Infinitive' in Boece. Contrary to the Retroactive Infinitive, this is almost always a transcription of the original 'esse+Future Participle.' | |||||
