| 内容記述 | Willa Cather's My Antonia written in 1918 had been regarded as the novel depicting the life of a woman who lived in the Western frontier, eulogizing the agrarian way of life in the past pioneering days. Indeed, the book is full of description about human efforts against land and taming of it into fertile farm, and, also, it depicts the land-related image and the fecundity of the heroine, Antonia Shimerda, who is metaphorically expressed as "a rich mine of life." Though this manner of reading is never wrong in itself, it became clear in the late 70s that sexuality, lurking in the mind of the narrator Jim Burden or in the lesbian or androgynous disposition on the author's side, constitutes the dominant factor in his depicting Antonia's story. Further, many critics have discussed since its publication the problem as to which of the two characters is the true protagonist of the novel. In this paper, on the premise that My Antonia is the story of Jim Burden himself and of his confession about what Antonia meant to him, we will discuss how Jim Burden's psychosexual conflicts affects the progress of the story and his description of the heroine, and see how Antonia's fecundity, to which he ought to have had no physical relation, has the decisive relevance in providing Jim Burden with his salvation and his very bright future. | |||||||||||
