Il a pu recevoir communion le 15 aout 1874 et il est redevenu catholique. Et il a exprime ses sentiments religieux dans son oeuvre Sagesse. Nous en avons extrait un poeme ecrit apres la communion pour connaitre l'etat d'ame de ce neophyte. Ce poeme, c'est Ⅲ-Ⅷ: Purfums, couleurs, systemes, lois! En examinant les expressions de chaque vers, nous avons trouve des contrantes parmi les mots ; Fleur et Calice dans le huitieme vers, delice et supplice dans les douzieme et treizieme vers, les damnes et les Saints dans le quatorzieme vers, ets...Le contraste entre Fleur et Calice, renvoie a l'ephemere et a l'eternite, delice et supplice, au plaisir terrestre et au remords religieux, les damnes et les Saints, au profane et au sacre.　Verlaine a demontre sa foi catholique par ces contrastes. Mais de quelle foi s'agissait-il? Ce n'etait pas la foi naive accompagnee du bonheur qui se trouve souvent dans le coeurs : son ame faible voulant retourner a la vie ancienne et profane, et la croyance chretienne cherchant a se rapprocher de Dieu. De la vient la lutte sanglante. C'est out a fait ainsi qu'est la foi catholique de Verlaine.
