内容記述 | In this article, problems and issues on objectives and contents of science teaching at elementary school level (Grade 3 to 6 ) were discussed based on my research findings, by citing the instances of science teachers' opinions. The crucial points for the improvement of elementary school science were proposed as follows: (1) To enrich "scientific literacy" should be considered as most important objectives of science teaching. More emphasis should be placed on understanding and making judgment of the ways how one's life and society are influenced by and influence science and technology, as well as skills and attitudes in solving problems. (2) Scope of contents should be enlarged, by including the contents related to the "application and practical use of science in daily life and society". Cross-curricular approaches need to be taken, which interrelate and integrate the contents across the subject areas, in view of science and technology in society. (3) Fundamental ideas of basic science should be developed and redeveloped in "spiral" mode, becoming deeper and wider, as the learner progresses through the higher grades. Sequence of contents should be tested and judged in the entire science curriculum, by studying children's development, which provides dues to know about what is most appropriate at a specific grade level. (4) There exist the strong demands for "more" contents and time, while in reality the "less" contents and time were allocated in the current curriculum. Such paradoxical situation should be solved, by constructing systematic linkage between school and out-of-school activities related to science and technology. (5) In guiding the organization of entire science curriculum from elementary to lower secondary schools, the children's growth in "abilities to abstract from the facts and to solve problems", and the accumulation of those learning experiences should be taken into consideration. To cope with the differences in attainment of concepts and skills, more emphasis should be placed on the individualized curriculum and instruction. | |||||
