内容記述 This paper contrasts course design for teacher training for elementary school English classes in two contexts: an open graduate school course and an in-house elementary school training course. The open course was composed of participants from diverse backgrounds, so the priority was to create a common foundation of experience, then use this as a jumping off point for discussions and exposition of SLA theory and teaching methodology. The other salient characteristic of this group was lack of a common direct application to teaching. Some participants had, in fact, no current teaching position. To accommodate this, a curriculum project was arranged so as to integrate all elements of the course into application to a context chosen by each participant. In contrast, the in-house setting involved teachers with a common base of knowledge and experience; a common setting, complete with set goals and, in this case, a common set of well-known materials they had seen used repeatedly in class. Theory and methodology could be dealt with more directly, common experience being a given, and actual classroom teaching could be emphasized, as it was available to all, and could be observed by the course instructor.
