JIU as a focusing adverb specifies its scope of focus as a stressed phrase, which is characterized by a weakening after the logically stressed words. JIU itself may or may not be stressed. When it is stressed, it is immediately followed by the stressed focus phrase without an intervening pause. Which of the pair of the stressed phrases has the primary stress distinguish two shades of the focus meaning, which are termed as “eliminative focus” and “emphasis of paucity”.
