The lexically reflexive verbs, initially proposed in Japanese linguistics, are known to allow causative-like constructions with “gei” in Chinese. These verbs are divided into two classes: the pure reflexives vs. non-reflexive verbs with reflexive usage, which is precluded by “gei” as the marker of the indirect object. Substitution of “gei” with the beneficiary marker “wei” results in ambiguity between reflexive and non-reflexive readings of non-reflexive verbs.
