The tunnel was dug from both ends to meet in the middle. Since the tunnel was rediscovered in the nineteenth century, there have been several investigations. The present article reports a new measurement of the tunnel using modern instruments and a reinvestigation of the construction strategy. The new measurements confirm the professionalism of the original design; the two ends of the tunnel start accurately in direction and slope. The  tunnel from the northern end deviates from the line but makes correcting turns. The tunnels meet with a difference in height of only 64 cm. This accuracy shows that there would have been continual measurement and reassessment of the progress of the tunnels. The instruments of the time that\nare known to us would not have been sufficient for these tasks.
