| 内容記述 | In recent years, the restructuring of the manufacturing industry has resulted in the shutting down of many large-scale plants in Japan. Such plant closures have serious influences on branch plant economies in the domestic peripheral regions. Therefore, this study analyzed the local impacts of plant closures, focusing on the mobility of workers. The case study was conducted in Izumi City， Kagoshima Prefecture. In Izumi city, two large electronics factories owned by NEC and Prioneer were shut down in 2009. Approximately 1,000 employees were forced to either transfer to other factories ore opt for voluntary retirement. Based on the investigation of NEC employees, only 5% of them transferred to another factory in a remote area; the remaining 95% of workers chose voluntary retirement. The transfer to a remote location was difficult for them because of the circumstances of their families and the distance from their houses. Trends in reemployment varied, depending on the career of workers, location of reemployment, circumstances of workers' families, and so on. Most especially, the situation of their families had a significant influence on reemployment. The high ratio of reemployment within the area was closely related to the existing local industrial structure. Some small manufacturers, attempting to take advantage of technology transfer, expanded new businesses by actively employing retired engineers. The transfer of talented workers prompted by plant closures promoted technology transfer to local small- and medium-sized manufacturers． |
