The name was changed to “The Japanese Red Cross Society”one year after the Japanese Government had become a member of the Geneva Convention in 1886. This study examines the process of the establishment of the Japanese Red Cross Society and the formation of its local organizations. The focus is on the specific case of “Hiroshima Hakuaisha” which was originally founded in 1886 and became the first local branch of the Japanese Red Cross Society in 1888.
