The purpose of the present study was to compare cardiovascular responses in untrained females with those in males during head-up tilt. Blood pressure, heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, total peripheral resistance,cardiac contractility, and pulse wave velocity during head-up tilt were measured in eight untrained females and six males. In untrained females, although the systolic blood pressure, stroke volume, and cardiac output were decreased significantly during head-up tilt, the diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, total peripheral resistance, and pulse wave velocity were increased significantly, so that the mean blood pressure was maintained. In males, despite the significant decrease in strole volume during head-up tilt, the heart rate and pulse wave velocity were increased significantly, so that the mean blood pressure was maintained. The increase in pulse wave velocity was significantly larger in untrained females than in males. These findings suggest that the action of vasoconstriction of muscular arteries by sympathetic activation on blood pressure regulation during upright standing is larger in untrained females than in males. |
