Scotland has introduced the terminology of Additional Support Needs (ASN) within its Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, amended by the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2009. The concept of ASN is different from the concept of Special Educational Needs used in other countries such as England in the UK. Firstly, the author will outline the relevant legislation, statistics about number of pupils who have been reported to have ASN, reasons for support, and conceptualization of ASN.
