To apply gold nanorods in life sciences, polyethyleneglycol (PEG) were modified on the surface of the gold surface, and CTAB was then removed. The PEG modification decreased the cytotoxicity and increased the half-life of gold nanorods in blood circulation. After that, several applications, e.g., bioimaging, photothermal therapy, controlled release, and transdermal protein delivery systems using the gold nanorods are reported.
