| 内容記述 | Visibility is the essential condition for sailing between islands, but the decision to start seafaring depends on cultural rather than geographical factors. In North Ryukyu (NR) and Middle Ryukyu (MR), seafaring is easy because each island in the island chain is mutually visible, and the route is open to Kyushu in the north. The situation is different where an island is only visible from one side, in other works, where visibility is not mutual. People show little willingness to travel to the other island. In two of these cases, the case of Taiwan and the western part of South Ryukyu (SR) shows almost no relation until the end of prehistoric time, while in the case of the Yaeyama Islands, there is only little contact between the islands of Tarama and Miyako. People who lived on the Ryukyu Islands in prehistoric times were actively traveling overseas between neighboring islands that are mutually visible, on the one hand; while they remain passive in regions with little cultural relations or regions that are in far distance. Presumably, their life in islands surrounded by fringing-reefs which provide plenty of seafood was sufficient to live and no need to go out. | |||||
