| 内容記述 | In Present-day Standard English (PSE), we have two types of verbs: regular verbs and irregular verbs. The former generate their preterite and past-participial forms in terms of adding the inflectional suffix -(e)d, while the latter do so utilizing other methods than adding it; one such method is vowel gradation of the verb stem which was once named Ablaut by Jacob Grimm in the 19th century and characterizes so-called strong verbs found in Germanic languages to which English belongs. As opposed to strong verbs, the verbs with dental suffixes like -(e)d were called weak verbs. Then, can we say that all the previous weak verbs are identical with the present-day regular verbs? The answer is: “No.” Rather, the fact is that quite a lot of them are now regarded as irregular. However it is also true that we are not so sure about how irregular the present-day irregular verbs are. So the present paper analyzed, from the viewpoint of the history of English, the regularity and irregularity in the verbal inflection system in PSE. As the result, what have made the previous weak verbs irregular are: (1) the existence of another substantial suffix for weak verbs, i.e., -t, (2) vowel changes in some weak verb stems, and (3) analogical verbal formation with some patterns of strong verbs. | |||||||||||
