Through her physical mobility from Kellynch Hall, the traditional gentleman's house, to Uppercross, Lyme and Bath, Anne experiences what is noted as the gradual alteration from \"prudence\" to \"romance.\" My reading in this essay focuses on Anne's mental development with special reference to the perspective of \"elasticity of mind.\" The word \"elasticity,\" though it literally means the power of material substances that spontaneously recovers their original shape, figuratively indicates human character of \"energy, vigour, buoyancy of mind or character, capacity for resisting or overcoming depression.\" (OED2) Interestingly, what is connoted by this phraseology not only has a great impact on Anne's mind, but also epitomizes the essential traits that all Austen's heroines, whether active or quiet, have in common.
