| 内容記述 | In 1919, T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) advocates the "Impersonal theory of poetry" in "Tradition and the Individual Tradition, "insisting first of all on criticizing or appreciating a poem, not the poet who creates it. This insistence means that we should not identify the various things in life with the poet who writes his poem based on these experiences. Eliot's "Impersonal theory of poetry" greatly emphasizes the impersonality of a poet. This emphasis attempts to turn away our criticism or appreciation of the personal feelings of the poet. Paying attention to another aspect of the "Impersonal theory of poetry," this paper examines how Eliot indirectly describes his mother, Charlotte Champe Eliot (1843-1929) in "Burnt Norton"(1935) and "The Dry Salvages"(1941) because this description has not been fully considered in the two poems. In so doing, this paper treats seriously both three short poems, "New Hampshire"(1934), "Virginia"(1934), "Cape Ann"(1935), and his letters addressed to his moth In 1932-33, Eliot went to his hometown, in America, to give a lecture at two universities, Harvard and Virginia. Eliot thought that he could separate himself from his wife, Vivienne Eliot (1888-1947), who had shared his joys and sorrows in life but was mentally unbalanced. After coming to England, Eliot published the three short poems, each of which expresses his impressions of New Hampshire, Rivanna River and Cape Ann during his stay in America. These impressions brought back to him his happy boyhood. Then, Eliot visited an old manor at Gloucestershire. He conveyed to us his own experiences at the old manor in "Burnt Norton," where he wrote "What might have been and what has been / point to one end, which is always present." Things desired by his parents, Henry Ware Eliot, Sr. (1843-1919) and Charlotte are represented by "What has been," such as Eliot's return to America and his research in philosophy. Actual things undesired by his parents such as Eliot having settled in England, and his marriage to an Englishwoman Vivienne, and his research in literature are represented in "what has been." And "one end" is "the still Point" as Eliot's mother, which is shown in his letter addressed to her in Dec. 30, 1917. He conquers the two contrary lives, and has the world of "the still point," which centered on his mother, and was composed of Henry and Vivienne. A group of rocks off Rockport, Massachusetts is indicated by "The Dry Salvages." In his childhood when he went to a vacation house built by his father, Eliot saw the New England Sea surrounding the group rocks. Later in life he mentioned through a series of letters written to his mother, a close relationship between his mother and Gloucester, where the vacation house was located. "The Dry Salvage" described the Mississippi River near the house where Eliot was born at Missouri. In 1950, he thought the river was without beginning or end. This suggests that he considered a close relationship between his mother as "the still Point" and the river. In "The Dry Salvages" as well as in "Burnt Norton," Eliot lives throughout his later life, holding onto the world of "the still Point" and relying on his happy childhood. | |||||||||||
