内容記述 | In April 2016, a series of strong earthquakes struck Kumamoto Prefecture, including a mainshock which had a maximum magnitude of 7.0 (The 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes). These earthquakes caused serious damage to various areas of Kumamoto Prefecture, and left 50 people dead and over 3,000 injured. The Kumamoto region has not yet recovered from the damage and is still in the process of reconstruction two years later. The campus of Kumamoto University was also affected by the earthquakes. The former Kumamoto Fifth High School building was heavily damaged and is currently closed as it is undergoing earthquake-resistant repairs. The Kumamoto Fifth High School is known for its long history. Two eminent writers, Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) and Soseki Natsume (1867-1916), taught English at the Fifth High School during the Meiji era. Coincidently, both writers published interesting essays on a famous natural disaster that occurred in June 1896—the Meiji Sanriku earthquake. This earthquake and the accompanying powerful tsunami caused over 22,000 deaths. Hearn wrote an article entitled “A Living God” in the noted American magazine The Atlantic Monthly in December 1896, while Soseki published an essay entitled “Life” (Japanese title “Jinsei” 人生) in the Ryonankwai Magazine (龍南会雑誌) of the Kumamoto Fifth High School in October of the same year. This paper aims to examine these two literary essays published just after the Meiji Sanriku earthquake and analyzes how the natural disaster of the Meiji era inspired the thoughts and imaginations of two intellectuals. |
