内容記述 | Modern Chinese painter and writer Feng Zikai 豊子愷(1898-1975) mentions Lafcadio Hearn in his essay 小泉八雲在地下(Lafcadio Hearn in the Other World, 1938). Feng mentions that Hearn expressed the artistic feature of Japanese life in Sea Literature and Insect Literature. Feng’s essay aimed to criticize the fascism of Japan in that period.(1) Feng was a student at Tokyo for about one year in 1921. He became a mediator of European art and music in the Minguo era. In his later years he was also a pro-Japanese, and his translations of Japanese classics are very popular in China today. As an admirer of Natsume Soseki, Feng often mentioned Soseki’s work, and even translated Kusamakura 草枕 into Chinese. But, the name of Hearn appeared just one time in the essay cited above. Nevertheless, in Feng’s library, we can find Kwaidan (Kenkyusha, 1930). Lafcadio Hearn was within his sight. Sea Literature and Insect Literature were published in 1921, in English with a Japanese translation. Because Feng was fond of bilingual literary books, it is possible that he had bought these books during his stay in Japan. Including “Kusahibari” there are ten essays about insects in Insect Literature. According to professor Sukehiro Hirakawa, “Kusahibari” inspired Soseki’s “Buncho” 文鳥(Java Sparrow). Hirakawa’s article on the comparison of these two works suggests a similarity of these short essays with Chinese writer Feng Zikai’s “Kedou” 蝌蚪(Tadpole). This paper aims to further interpretation by the comparison of “Kusahibari” and “Buncho”and “Kedou”. |
