| 内容記述 | Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) published “The Legend of Yurei-Daki” in Kotto (1902). It is well known that this story was adapted from a short story, “Yurei-Daki,” in Bungei-Club, a magazine of local short stories, published in 1901. Since Hearn could not read Japanese, his wife, Setsu, read stories for him as told in her Memoirs (1927). Although the main plot is an adaptation, Hearn added and changed some important points to create his own story. Thus, this can be called an original story. This story contains mystic and Gothic elements with a killing. It is natural that the readers at the time of publication, some 120 years ago, and present-day readers may have different attitudes toward this story. Therefore, in this paper, I propose new interpretations to this mystery as a present-day reader. | |||||||||||
