 note = {In this paper we examine the polysemy and network structure of the Japanese word chotto from the perspective of discourse analysis and cognitive linguistics in the corpus of Japanese Daily Interaction (Gendai Nihongo Kenkyukai 2016), finding the following : 1) Of the 639 cases of chotto from the corpus, more than 40% were difficult or impossible to replace with sukoshi ‘a little’. 2) These uses making up more than 40% of chotto were analyzed in terms of what they modify, and five types were identified. 3) We analyzed these five types based on the schematic-network model, finding a structure consisting of extensions and links from the prototypical meaning of ‘small amount or low degree’. Two super-schemas were extracted at the top level in this structure: ‘restriction on the degree of modifiers’ and ‘no modified part, discourse management function’, and links between them were also identified.},
