Many of today’s guidelines for professional medical ethics pertain to the prioritization of patients’ benefits. At face value, this prioritizing is considered to be a physician’s professional duty. In this paper, we argue that supererogation, a morally valued action that transcends a physician’s professional obligations, exists and should be properly distinguished from professional duty. We maintain that, in the long run, an advantageous result will be achieved by distinguishing the two. It is also claimed that supererogatory acts are fundamentally good when conducted thereafter fulfilling one’s basic professional duties and social obligations as an individual in society. |
