The purpose of this research is to identify the present situation of Dietary Education in Sri Lankan elementary schools. Same as the previous research (Kuwahata, Furuta, and Sethunga, 2007), table of contents of the curriculum of "Environmental Related Activities" and chapters dealing with Dietary Education for grade 3, 4 & 5 of elementary schools, which were written in Sinhalese, were analyzed. It was identified that Dietary Education conducted in "Environmental Related Activities" was consisted of units which were adapted to levels of daily life of students. Also it was planned to make students participate in the class actively by performing what they learned through songs, dramas and drawing pictures. Same as the contents in grade 1 & 2, Dietary Education was consisted with those dealing with Nutrition, Cooking and Food Hygiene. It was intended for students to learn from nearby phenomenon in the daily life up to variouse vents in the local community. Regarding the teaching methodology, in the grade 3, 4 & 5, not only the theoretical part but also the practical one were shown, sama as the stage 1. However how far the practical learning is conducted in Dietary Educationin "Environmental Related Activities" is still unknown when rather poor facilities for Dietary Education and the dominance of rote learning in schools are considered. This will be the future task. Finally, there was much repetition in the contents of Dietary Education through grade 1 to 5, such as repeated usage of the same contents in several grades. At the same time, it seemed that there was some mismatch of the grade and the degree of difficulty in the content. This will be the task for the future education reform in Sri Lanka. |
