| 内容記述 | No great influx of migration into England occured during the first half of the seventeenth century. Thus, the matter of the legal status and the rights which aliens in the host society could enjoy has received little attention from historians. This period was, however, a turning point in considering the issue of English nationality due to the drastic changes of its constitution. Additionally, a large number of petitions for naturalizations and, in particular denizations was granted between 1603 and 1660. The aim of this paper is to illuminate the details of those who gained the status of naturalized subject or denizen, such as their birthplaces, occupations and size of household, mainly examining the source, Letters of Denization and Acts of Naturalization for Aliens in England, 1603-1700. The conclusion of this analysis will shed light on the question of who should be and who became an English subject at that time. | |||||||||||
