The aim of this study is to develop a model of care enabling elderly people with demetia continue to live a home or in familiar environment (Aging-in place) in community-based Nursing Homes. A semi-structured interview was given to the operators of 25 community-based nursing homes to ask them about the practice of operating community-based nursing homes (differences from regular nursing homes), the practice of caring for elderly people with dementia, and the practice of end-of-life care. The data obtained from the interviews was inductively analyzed to categorize the data by similar meaning and to create a structured care model. Further, a quantitative study was conducted to verify the adequacy of the care model. The care model was composed of the 4 categories of [Functioning as a community-based nursing home], [Utilizing the characteristics of the unit type], [Supporting end-of-life care], and [Stable operation] consisting of 61 care service items, and internal consistency and factorial construct adequacy were obtained (Research period: October 26, 2010 to January 31, 2012). To achieve end-of-life care at community-based nursing homes to provide aging-in-place for elderly people with dementia, the state of end-of-life medicine at facilities for the elderly must be clarified. In addition to improving staff qualifications, it is important to obtain the understanding of families and people in the community. |
