| 内容記述 | This study elaborates on aliens who enjoyed the legal status and rights in Britain in the first half of the eighteenth century. Such aliens were called naturalized subjects or denizens. First, I will describe an outline of immigration in this period and the trace of the history of legal acts of naturalization for aliens. Second, I will investigate the features of the status of naturalized subjects and denizens, analysing historical documents, particularly acts of naturalization, letters of denization and parliamentary journals. There are two significant findings that emerge from these evidence. First, after the ascension of George I, the number of naturalizations decreased, and the instances of denization considerably lessened. Further, the rights which naturalized subjects enjoyed were restricted due to their foreign origins. Second, the most immigrants who became naturalized subjects were involved in overseas trade. These immigrants were primarily from Germany. Finally, under the Hanoverian reign, policy for immigrants favoured prosperous merchants from the European Continent. | |||||||||||
