This study aimed to elucidate the perspectives regarding mothers of concern among professionals in the hospital outpatient pediatric dental clinic to prevent child abuse and enhance child development. We conducted a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with 21 dentists and 5 dental hygienists who regularly assessed these mothers with potential multiple health and/or related problems. Mothers of concern included those “who neglect child care,” “who have difficulties in prolonging and supporting child health,” “with an unhealthy mother-child relationship to promote a child independence,” and “who stand out in the group.” Pediatric dentists’ and hygienists ’perspectives regarding mothers of concern emphasized the risk of child neglect, mothers’ health literacy, an unhealthy relationship, and mothers’ potential developmental disabilities. Additional research is necessary to develop multi-professional screening tools and care strategies. |
